Bill Hecker graduated from R.A. Long in 1969 after one of the greatest athletic careers in school history.  He was an all-conference running back in both his junior and senior seasons.  He was the league’s leading scorer his senior year. He was voted team MVP both of those seasons as well as several other football awards.  He earned multiple letters in basketball and baseball and was team captain of the baseball team.  He was given the Johnny Hammer Award in honor of the best all-around athlete of the senior class.  Bill was also a gifted student.  He graduated in the top 10% of the class of 1969.  He received a full-ride scholarship to the University of Puget Sound and graduated with honors in 1973.  He then earned a master’s degree from Stanford University.  Bill passed away unexpectedly in 2010.  It is in memory of this great Lumberjack that his family, friends, classmates, and teammates have established this award and $4,000 scholarship.  We hope you are inspired by Bill’s legacy.

Requirements
1. Recipient must be a graduating senior who plans to pursue higher education at a 2 or 4 year college and has a 3.4 or higher cumulative GPA

2. Recipient must have earned a minimum of three varsity athletic letters (letters for cheerleading and drama do not count) and must be known as a dedicated athlete who made a substantial contribution to his/her team(s)

3. Recipient must have taken academically challenging courses (AP classes, honors classes, higher level math and science courses, for example)

4. Recipient must be known among staff, students, and coaches as a friendly and courteous person

5. Recipient must have shown involvement in school activities in addition to athletics
